Chick-Fil-A Kiss-In Event Fizzles in NWA

Chick-Fil-A’s CEO Dan Cathy’s recent comments on same-sex marriage sparked outcry from lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights groups across the country. A national kiss in was scheduled for Aug. 3 in which same-sex couples would kiss in front of Chick-Fil-As.

However, the event mostly fizzled in northwest Arkansas. Nothing has happened so far, said Corporal Miller of the Washington County Sherriff’s department. They just hired us to help with traffic, just like we do for football games, Miller said.

A blog entry on the NWA Center for Equality’s blog asked people to boycott Chick-Fil-A starting on July 27. On Aug. 3 LGBT rights activists and same-sex couples chose to eat Backyard Burger instead of Chick-Fil-A. The event was called Backyard Burgers Appreciation Day in response to Mike Huckabee’s Chick-Fil-A Appreciation Day on Aug 1. The event was posted by Out on the Town Magazine.

Backyard Burger was chosen for previously supporting LGBT rights by pulling their ads from the Northwest Times after a same-sex couple was denied an engagement announcement according to the Backyard Burgers Appreciation Day Facebook event page.

The only place that the kiss-in occurred was at the Chick-Fil-A on College Ave. according to a comment on the Facebook event page.

Some pro Chick-Fil-A protesters did show up outside of the restaurant in Bentonville with a large wooden cross. “We are not here to hate anyone, we are just here to spread the word of Jesus Christ, Mike Fisher of Bentonville said.
